Woodgrain Velvet Decorative Pillow
Kevin O’Brien Studio, 2012
35% Silk, 65% Rayon
18" W x 18" H

For 15 years Kevin O’Brien worked out of a 2nd floor walk-up in an Old City loft building. Last July he moved his operations into an old South Philadelphia movie theatre, where he and his team now hand paint and print fabrics in greater quantities. His pillows and scarves start out as solid white velvet, called “grey goods” by the designer. Then a screen-printing and acid process burns parts of the velvet away to create the pattern. The color comes from non-toxic dyes sprayed on one at a time using a technique O’Brien has developed and perfected over the years. A steamer sets the dye, and the fabrics are rinsed and washed.
