When Windsor Chairs reached the colonies by way of Philadelphia in 1700, they were known along the Atlantic seaboard as Philadelphia Chairs. Every Founding Father (not to mention the founding mothers) sat in one. They’re in Philadelphia’s blood a nd they’re in Adam Rung’s. The third-generation woodworker’s parents, based in Chambersburg, PA, specialize in18th century and Shaker-style furniture. He apprenticed with them for six years before opening up his own shop in Port Richmond, Philadelphia. This Windsor side chair reflects Rung’s background and his current portfolio, which balances the traditional with the contemporary. His twist is ecological responsibility: Rung uses only domestic hardwoods harvested in the Mid-Atlantic region, and he reuses every piece of scrap in his studio. CT
