Indian artist Bhaval Shah Bell started painting the abstract map art that evolved into these map pillows in the mid-aughts when she and her husband were living in Philadelphia’s Loft District. The works’ overall designs evoke the potential distribution of any given data point: population, trees, heat. “A painting I had hanging in our loft attracted a lot of attention from friends,” Bell says. “One commission led to another and soon I found myself painting almost full time.” She now lives in Washington, D.C. where she established Cartoloji in 2011 to turn her art into prints and pillows.
